On 15 October, HCMC Department of Information and Communications coordinated with Publisher Association of Vietnam (Southern office in HCMC) held a groundbreaking ceremony of the “HCMC’s book street” project in Nguyen Van Binh Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1. The project welcomes the 10th HCMC Congress Party and is expected to put into operation on the 75th anniversary of Southern Uprising Day (November 23 1940-November 23 2015.
The project is 144m long, a width of 8m and pavements of 6m. The project includes stalls of books, book café and a space for organizing propaganda and promotion activities of reading culture.
This is good news for people of HCMC and those who are working in publishing-printing sectors, it opens good prospects for spreading knowledge, creating a whole life learning environment for people of HCMC. The HCMC’s book street is also an attractive tourist site for local and foreign visitors.
The book street is a place for meeting, exchanging and sharing professional experience between those in the publishing and releasing sectors, introducing trends of new books, an incubation of young authors and new writings. The book street will create habits and ways of reading, establish passion for reading.
In addition, HCMC’s book street is a venue for reading culture related activities in holidays, political and cultural lives of HCMC; a place for organizing exchanging activities with international friends and colleagues. It also satisfies the needs of spiritual culture of people of HCMC and visitors, a place where visitors enjoy cultural characteristics of HCMC’s people after hard working days.
