US Fund Bloomberg Philanthropies supports HCMC to organize transport safety

On March 31, Vice Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Huu Tin attended a meeting between representatives of Departments-sectors of HCMC with US Fund Bloomberg on implementation of global transport safety in the period of 2015-2019.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tin said HCMC is a leading center for economy, culture, science and technology of the whole country, a main transport hub but the current urban transport infrastructure is not matched with demand and development potential of HCMC, the density of individual transport means is growing, the awareness of law abiding residents on local people is still limited, so traffic jams and accidents are unavoidable.

Mrs. Kelly Larson, Director of Program of Bloomberg fund said road accidents kill 1,2 million people an injure 50 million people per year worldwide. With a desire of reducing the fatalities and the injuries from road accidents, Bloomberg fund launched the global initiative on road traffic safety and HCMC is one of 10 cities chosen for the second phase of the program. Mrs. Kelly Larson added the purpose of the working with HCMC is to exchange information on plans of HCMC and partners, discussing common co-operation programs and specific co-operation projects.

At the working, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, deputy head of HCMC traffic safety Committee presented the outline of proposed project of traffic safety. Accordingly, HCMC traffic safety committee is expected to conduct synchronously three solutions including: propaganda and strengthening enforcement of traffic polices; doing research and building traffic safety policies; strengthening system of traffic infrastructure.
