The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations and Ho Chi Minh City’s Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association held a ceremony to mark Romania’s National Day (December 1, 1918) in Ho Chi Minh City on November 30.

Though newly established in April 2014, the Ho Chi Minh City’s Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association has been running a number of events to promote the multi-faceted relations between the two countries such as economics, culture, and science-technology, said Chairman Nguyen Sy Thang.

Romanian Ambassador Valeriu Arteni told the event that the traditional friendship between Romania and Vietnam has contributed to the ties between the EU, of which Romania is a member, and Vietnam .

He affirmed that Romania is actively supporting Vietnam in enhancing its cooperation with the EU, including the signing of the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

The ambassador took note of bilateral cooperation programmes in various fields from judiciary, education and science-technology to broadcasting since the two countries established diplomatic ties 65 years ago.

He added that the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding on cooperation between localities of the two sides this year will facilitate Vietnam-Romania comprehensive collaboration.

The ambassador said he expects bilateral trade, which currently stands at over 100 million USD, will increase considerably once the FTA between EU and Vietnam is signed.
