Work on HCM City's first bus rapid transit line would likely to start in early 2016, Luong Minh Phuc, head of the City Urban Civil Works Construction Investment (UCCI) Management Authority, said.

Speaking at a seminar on September 9 he said the 23.5 km BRT line on Vo Van Kiet – Mai Chi Tho Boulevard would begin at An Lac roundabout, pass through the districts of Binh Chanh, Binh Tan, 6, 5, 1, and 2, ending at the Cat Lai Intersection.

The cost of developing it will be around US$155 million, of which the World Bank will provide $142.25 million.

The first BRT line is expected to be ready by the end of 2018 when 80-seat buses will transport passengers.

Buses will depart every five to 10 minutes, transporting around 31,600 passengers a day in 2018 and 86,250 by 2030.

Phuc said the UCCI, which would operate the first BRT line, would seek to offer reasonable fares to popularise the service.

HCM City is also considering the feasibility of five other lines of 8.5km to 24 km.

Line No 2 will be 24km long and run from the New Mien Tay bus station in Binh Chanh District to Phu My Bridge between Districts 2 and 7.

The 19km line No 3 will connect An Suong crossroads in District 12 with the New Mien Tay bus station.
