On August 18, HCMC Department of External Relations celebrated the 40th anniversary of establishment. Attending the ceremony included Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan, Vice Secretary of HCMC Party’s Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Vice Chairwoman of HCMC People’s Council Truong Thi Anh, Vice Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem and representatives of foreign consulate general in HCMC.

Reviewing the 40 year journey of HCMC Department of External Relations, Director Nguyen Vu Tu said the department has contributed to the process of promoting multilateral relations, organizing and receiving many international delegations to HCMC and Southern provinces. From 2011-2014, there were 200 international delegations visiting HCMC on average per year. In the last 15 years, HCMC has received many heads of state including US President Bill Clinton and George Bush, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Russian Prime Minister Medvedev, Japanese Prince Naruhito, etc.
HCMC Department of External Relations has done a good job in organizing overseas missions of leaders of HCMC to tighten political relations and to promote economic co-operation. From 2011-2014, on a yearly basis, the department organizes and arranges over 20 overseas missions for HCMC’s leaders.
In the first 8 months of 2015, a number of overseas missions are 26. From 2000 till now, leaders of HCMC have paid visit to 30 countries and territories such as Laos, Cambodia, Japan, Korea, USA, Russia, China, France, Germany, Italy, etc.

A number of representative offices of international organizations are quickly increasing. Till June 2015, a total of 25 professional consulate offices, 24 honorary consulate offices, 15 economic-trade-cultural offices, 5 international organizations and many non-governmental organizations and representative offices of foreign companies are setting up their presence in HCMC. Management and coordination between HCMC Department of External Relations with foreign representative offices require a prompt and clever treatment to ensure political security in HCMC and Southern provinces.

In addition, HCMC Department of External Relations has also done a good job in supporting local offices of external relations in the South through sharing information and experience, strengthening co-operation in trade-investment-tourism promotion, protecting citizens, fisherman boats or cases involving foreign factors, etc. 

HCMC Department of External Relations also organized many important international events such as Senor Officials Meeting II in the framework of APEC 2006, WTO deal between Vietnam and US in 2007, CODATU 2008,   World Economic Forum on Asia East 2010, ITE 2009-2014 and most recently ASEAN Flag raising ceremony, the 20th anniversary of Vietnam joining ASEAN and 48th birthday of ASEAN, etc.
