On April 28, a delegation of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development led by Deputy Minister Vu Van Tam had a working visit to HCMC on consumption of livestock products.

According to a report, HCMC’s total pig herd reached 364, 257 heads, 54, 497 sows and 202, 476 porkers. In comparison to 2016, a total herd of sows and porkers increased by 3, 92% and 4, 51% respectively. Due to cheap live weight pig price, there is a big amount of inventory of pigs.

Deputy Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Tran Vinh Tuyen said the city shared difficulties with farmers due to deeply low price, saying the city has closely cooperated with Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to deal with current difficulties. Accordingly, related departments and agencies have coordinated with provinces to control origin of pigs to deal with demand and supply, lowering the selling price for consumers while increasing purchasing price for farmers, buying frozen pork & restricting intermediaries to increase the live weight pig price for farmers.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam emphasized that it requires 3 urgent solutions to deal with current situation including temporarily stopping importing pork and boosting local consumption; increasing live weigh pig price for farmers and reducing selling price for consumers; reducing intermediary costs.
