On December 27, Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong chaired a meeting on implementation of solutions to reduce traffic jam in the year-end month of 2016 and 2017.

According to Mr. Le Van Khoa, traffic jam is not responsibility of Department of Transport but a common task of other departments, agencies and districts in HCMC, saying all must be responsible for reducing traffic congestion.

With current 37 hot spots for traffic jams, Mr. Le Van Khoa suggested Department of Transport, People’s Committees of Districts and HCMC Department of Public Security to arrange for men to control traffic flow to improve traffic situation at these hot spots. Regarding to the city’s solutions to traffic congestion such as change of working hours, odd-even parking restriction, Mr. Le Van Khoa requested the mass media to join hands with the city to seek the best solutions.

Facing the more serious traffic congestion, Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong requested Departments, agencies and districts to do their assigned missions drastically. Firstly, all have to review hot spots of traffic jams. Department of Information and Communications will be in charge of sending text messages of traffic situations, strengthening propaganda activities on traffic laws and condemn traffic violations.

Regarding to 159 routes registered for restoring and maintaining pavement order, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong said if any unit fails to address the problem seriously, strict punishments will be conducted in cases of illegal parking or street side vendors on pavements found.
