On September 18, Politburo member, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the international container terminal SP-ITC with total investment capital of US$ 200 million.
SP-ITC has strategic location, located alongside Dong Nai and Ong Nhieu Rivers, connected with Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and Cai Mep port group which is favorable for import and export activities of enterprises in Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Mekong Delta areas.
With a total investment capital of US$ 200 million on an area of 48 hectares, total length of 1000sqm, a capacity of 2 million TEUs. SP-ITC has so far completed construction and put into operation Phase 1 with an area of 20 hectares, SP-ITC can be able to handle vessels with 230m long and 35,000 DWT. This is the first private international terminal using modern equipment such as specialized cranes from Germany capable of lifting 40 tons. All equipment is powered by electricity instead of diesel which is environmentally friendly and reducing power consumption by up to 30%.
Speaking at the ceremony, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said that 5 years ago, the SP-ITC terminal area was a swamp without roads, with huge efforts of HCMC and Vietnam marine sector, the SP-ITC will play the role of business gateway for HCMC and Southern key economic zone.
According to Mr. Truong Hoa Binh, SP-ITC international container terminal is not only a breakthrough of ITC but also presents a strategic vision which is suitable with development directions of HCMC: moving ports out of inner-city. SP-ITC will help reduce the pressure of Cat Lai port which is now overloaded.
Mr. Truong Hoa Binh suggested Ministry of Transport, leaders of HCMC and relevant units timely remove any difficulty and to create favorable conditions for ITC to effectively exploit its modern equipment, to bring high quality freight forwarding services to enterprises and to make positive contributions to the process of global economic integration and the common economic development of the whole country.
