HCMC’s economy continues to grow in the first 5 months of 2015

On May 28, Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan and Vice Chairman Tat Thanh Cang chaired a regular meeting on socio-economic, cultural, defense –security situations of HCMC in May and key missions in June.

According to a report, Director of HCMC Department of Planning and Investment Thai Van Re said economic situation of HCMC enjoyed a reasonable growth in the first 5 months, most of economic development indicators reached positive results, the city has well controlled price and inflation indexes.


Specifically, total retail sales and service turnover in May was estimated at VND 54,315 billion, down 0, 4% compared to April and up 8, and 7% compared to the same period of last year. In general, total retail sales and service revenue of the first 5 months was estimated at VND 267,070 billion, up 10, 8% compared to the same period. The CPI in May continued to enjoy a slight increase, up 0, 3% compared to previous month and up 0, 74% compared to the same period, down 0, 39% compared to December 2014. Export volume in May was estimated at US$ 2, 57 billion, up 7, 6% compared to previous month and down 13, 4% compared to the same period. It was estimated that export volume in the first 5 months reached US$ 11, 76 billion, down 8, 1% compared to the same period. Import volume in May was estimated at US$ 2, 67 billion, up 4, 1% compared to April and down 3, 7% compared to the same period. In general, import volume was estimated at US$ 12, 48 billion, up 8, 1% compared to the same period.

 

Index of industrial production in May was up 6% compared to the same period. Industrial production scale continued to be expanded, structure of industrial sector continued to be transferred in the direction of gradually increasing proportion of processed industries, manufacturing and decreasing proportion of mining industries. 4 key industries (mechanical manufacturing, electronics, chemical-rubber-plastic and food processing) was up 5, 8% compared to the same period.

 

Domestic and foreign investment situation were very positive. Till May 20, 207 projects were granted Certificates of investment with total capital of US$ 572, 7 million, up 72, 5% in term of number of projects compared to the same period and down 7, 1% in term of capital. 68 adjusted capital projects worth US$ 390 million, up 70% (number of projects) compared to the same period and 5, 6 times higher than adjusted capital. In general, total newly registered and adjusted investment capital stayed at US$ 1, 06 billion, up 34% compared to the same period of last year.

 

Till May 20, 11,419 enterprises were newly licensed worth VND 77,388.8 billion, up 19,2% in term of number of enterprises and up 45,51% in term of registered capital; 16,694 enterprises adjusting their business registration content with adjusted capital worth VND 44,514 billion, up 2,4% in term of number of enterprises and down 7,5% in term of adjusted capital. In general, total registered and adjusted capital reached VND 121,902.8 billion, up 20, 3% compared to the same period of last year. HCMC has done a good job in budget revenue and expenditure, planning, urban management, bringing many socio-economic benefits, improving technical and social infrastructure.

 

In term of culture-society, HCMC has remained public sports and gained many high achievements at international and national competitions, the city has done a good job in education and training as well as health care activities, ensuring food hygiene and safety; paying a special attention to poverty reduction. Public reception, administrative reform and external relation continue to be well ensured. Political security, social order, traffic safety are stable.

 

At the meeting, Mr. Le Hoang Quan requested Departments, agencies, districts from June to the end of 2015 continue to carry out drastically guidance of the Government and of HCMC on socio-economic development, achieving and exceeding targets; strengthening trade and investment promotion activities; expanding potential markets, solving obstacles and difficulties (capital, land, technology, etc) for enterprises to strengthen production activities and export.

 

Mr. Quan also requested departments-agencies-localities continue to organized festivals, public music, political propaganda activities associated with patriotism education and national historical traditions; strengthening inspection of protection and prevention of dengue fever, hand, foot, and mouth disease, chickenpox, influenza A, etc; ensuring absolute safety of political security, social order; successfully organizing The Party Congress at all levels; preparing for the 9th HCMC Party Congress and the 12th National Party Congress .
