An Airports Corporation of Viet Nam proposal to upgrade and expand terminal T2 at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City at a cost of VND2.31 trillion (US$114.2 million) has been approved by Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang.

It envisages enlarging the terminal by 22,000sq.m to 115,834sq.m with 120 check-in counters, an increase of 40, and 19 boarding gates.

The work, to be completed in 2017, will enable it to handle 13 million passengers a year, an increase of 3 million over the current capacity.

A first stage will start in November this year and be completed in a year at a cost of VND1.5 trillion.

According to the ACV, the terminal is expected to serve 29 million passengers, including 13 million foreigners, by 2018.

Long Thanh International Airport in neighbouring Dong Nai Province can only be completed after 2024, the ACV said.

"In the next 10 years the international terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport will remain the major facility for international passengers flying to the southern region of Viet Nam. Therefore, expansion of T2 is a necessity."

Since the land required for the expansion belongs to it, the public would not be affected, it added.
